Pace Area Guide
Welcome home to picturesque and peaceful Pace, Florida! Located minutes from major attractions and bustling commerce centers, Pace offers an enjoyable lifestyle and communal spirit between the bayous and beautiful beaches of Northwest Florida!
History
The beautiful Santa Rosa community of Pace enjoys a proud history dating back hundreds of years! Prior to 1818, the area was occupied by Spanish Settlers who obtained it from Chumuckla Indians.
The nearby port city of Pensacola was captured by American General Andrew Jackson in 1814, then later in 1818 and for the final time in 1821.
Jackson’s famous final incursion led to the legend that he and his men had camped beneath the sprawling Floridatown oak now known as “Jackson’s Oak.”
Gradually, through land grants and sales, the area was divided and became a busy trading ground for Native American tribes and colonial settlers.
By 1840, the area had been growing steadily and required a Ferry Terminal to aid in the transportation of goods; Ferry’s Pass was born!
Following the Civil War, Georgian entrepreneur James G. Pace ventured south to purchase approximately one-hundred thousand acres of timber land.
He built a sawmill near the beginning of the 20th Century nestled between area highways complete with a commissary and housing quarters.
This important industrial landmark employed two-hundred men, fueling growth in the community that later came to bear Pace’s name in 1912.
J.G. Pace became known as a man who treated his employees fairly, and was considered an expert in forestry methods.
In 1920, he was sent as a delegate by the U.S. Government to France in order to learn new methods, which he later employed in the forested hills of Santa Rosa.
In 1929, Pace mill was converted into a turpentine business. Gradually, the community became a tourism hotspot due to its proximity to gorgeous white-sand beaches and the historic Escambia County.
In the years since, Pace has become home to a strong presence of U.S. military servicemen and Navy families due to its proximity to famous bases.
